How to Close a Partial Position
search.svg

A partial close allows you to close a portion of your open position while keeping the remaining position open.

For example, if you have an open Buy position of 100 units and want to close 50 units, you can close 50 units and keep the remaining 50 units open.

There are two ways to close a partial position, depending on whether you want to close it immediately or at a specific price.

1. Close a Partial Position at Market Price

To close part of your position immediately, place an opposite order for the quantity you want to close.

Example:

If you have an open Buy position of 100 units and want to close 50 units, place a Sell order for 50 units. Once executed, your remaining Buy position will be 50 units.

Similarly, if you have an open Sell position of 100 units and want to close 50 units, place a Buy order for 50 units.

2. Close a Partial Position at a Specific Price

If you want to close part of your position when the market reaches a specific price, you can use a pending order.

For an open Buy position:

  • Sell Limit: To close part of your position at a higher price than the current market price.
  • Sell Stop: To close part of your position at a lower price than the current market price.

For an open Sell position:

  • Buy Limit: To close part of your position at a lower price than the current market price.
  • Buy Stop: To close part of your position at a higher price than the current market price.

Example:

You have an open Buy position of 100 units and want to close 50 units if the market reaches your target price. Place a Sell Limit order for 50 units at your desired price. If the order executes, 50 units will be closed and the remaining 50 units will stay open.

Note: Make sure the order quantity matches the portion you want to close. Pending orders may not execute at the exact requested price due to market conditions or slippage.
